I read your article, Studying for the wrong test, with interest. I think it is important to pass both tests. Everything you mentioned from homosexuality and abortion to justice and compassion are part and parcel of Christianity. What I am seeing in this day and age are Christians who can't pass any test but also quite a few that pass both. I think part of the problem of the Emergent conversation is the same problem that the old school church movement has. Both are arrogant to a degree, both major on only part of the gospel, and both are missing some key elements. Until the church sees that it is important to serve the poor as well as take a stand for life and holiness, until we serve our neighbors as well as give them the gospel, we are only passing part of the test.

    Hi Cyndi,
I agree that we need a holistic approach to the gospel. Coming from the Methodist tradition, I always liked Wesley's emphasis on both personal and social holiness. It is unfortunate that we often are presented with churches, authors, or organizations that only emphasize one or the other.
